Medical Education Partnership Initiative Compendium of Tools for Evaluating Community-Based Education Programs, and Pre-Workshop Activities Tool

This compendium of tools was disseminated to participants at the Medical Education Partnership Initiative Community-Based Education Evaluation Workshop. Participants used the pre-workshop activities tool to prepare in advance. In collaboration with the MEPI community-based education technical working group, CapacityPlus and the MEPI Coordinating Center conducted the workshop, which was held on April 1–3, 2014, in Kampala, Uganda. The participants represented 11 MEPI-supported institutions and consortiums in seven countries. During the workshop they shared good practices for community-based education evaluation, drafted school-specific program evaluation plans, and strengthened the community-based education community of practice.

Medical Education Partnership Initiative Community-Based Education Evaluation Workshop: Evaluation Plan Template, Logic Model Template, and Matrix of Tools

Participants at the Medical Education Partnership Initiative Community-Based Education Evaluation Workshop used these tools to draft school-specific program evaluation plans, develop a logic model for the plans, and review approaches for evaluating community-based education programs. In collaboration with the MEPI community-based education technical working group, CapacityPlus and the MEPI Coordinating Center conducted the workshop, which was held on April 1–3, 2014, in Kampala, Uganda.

Medical Education Partnership Initiative eLearning Workshop: Strategic Plan and SWOT Analysis Templates

Participants at the Medical Education Partnership Initiative (MEPI) eLearning Strategic Plan Development Workshop used these templates to draft school-specific eLearning strategic plans and to evaluate strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. In collaboration with the MEPI eLearning technical working group, CapacityPlus and the MEPI Coordinating Center organized and conducted the workshop, which was held in Gaborone, Botswana, on February 24–27, 2014. The participants represented 11 MEPI-supported schools and one MEPI consortium.

Medical Education Partnership Initiative eLearning Workshop: Developing a Strategic Plan

This presentation was given by Chris Busang of the University of Botswana during the Medical Education Partnership Initiative (MEPI) eLearning Strategic Plan Development Workshop, which was held in Gaborone, Botswana, on February 24–27, 2014. In collaboration with the MEPI eLearning technical working group, CapacityPlus and the MEPI Coordinating Center organized and conducted the workshop. Representatives from 11 MEPI-supported schools and one MEPI consortium completed draft eLearning strategic plans, shared knowledge and experiences, and built a supportive network of eLearning collaborators.

This presentation was given during the third day of the Medical Education Partnership Initiative Community-Based Education (CBE) Evaluation Workshop, which was held on April 1–3, 2014, in Kampala, Uganda. In collaboration with the MEPI community-based education technical working group, CapacityPlus and the MEPI Coordinating Center conducted the workshop. Representatives from 11 MEPI-supported institutions and consortiums in seven countries shared good practices for CBE evaluation, drafted school-specific program evaluation plans, and strengthened the CBE community of practice.

The Medical Education Partnership Initiative Physician Tracking Technical Working Group: Functional Requirements and Data Specifications Development Workshop

The Medical Education Partnership Initiative (MEPI) Physician Tracking Technical Working Group convened a workshop in Lusaka, Zambia, to develop the functional requirements and business processes necessary to construct a framework for tracking graduates. Held on October 21–23, 2013, the workshop was a collaborative effort among the chair of the Technical Working Group, the MEPI Coordinating Center, CapacityPlus, and the Public Health Informatics Institute. Each participating school formulated a graduate tracking vision and identified needed tools and guidance. The group selected software, capacity-building, and infrastructure as the top three priorities on which the MEPI Technical Working Group should focus its time and energy. Going forward, participants agreed to share what each institution is doing to develop graduate tracking, hold institutions accountable for their progress, network to sustain momentum, jointly develop graduate tracking tools, collaborate to develop articles, and assist institutions in tracking graduates across borders.

Community-Based Education Programs in Africa: Faculty Experience within the Medical Education Partnership Initiative (MEPI) Network

This article examines the various models, challenges, and evaluative efforts of community-based education programs at Medical Education Partnership Initiative (MEPI) schools and makes recommendations to strengthen those programs in the African context. Data were gathered from 12 MEPI schools. All schools reported a number of challenges in meeting the demands of increased student enrollment. Planned strategies used to tackle these challenges include motivating faculty, deploying students across expanded centers, and adopting innovations. Although the programs have similar goals, their strategies for achieving these goals vary. To identify approaches that successfully address the challenges, particularly with increasing enrollment, medical schools need to develop structured models and tools for evaluating the processes, outcomes, and impacts of community-based education programs. Such efforts should be accompanied by training faculty and embracing technology, improving curricula, and using global/regional networking opportunities. Graduate Tracking Systems for the Medical Schools in Africa: Processes for Developing an Implementation Framework

Human resources for health are critical for effective health systems. In Africa, the number of doctors and nurses required to provide essential health services will be deficient by an estimated 800,000 in 2015. Numerous interventions have been implemented to mitigate these shortages; tracking graduates from African universities is critical to determine whether interventions are effective. Based on a community of practice theory, a Graduate Tracking Technical Working Group was established within the Medical Education Partnership Initiative (MEPI) network. The group, with CapacityPlus, developed graduate tracking requirements for MEPI institutions and countries through a collaborative process. A framework was created to guide the establishment of graduate tracking systems consisting of seven core processes or elements: 1) general requirements; 2) locate graduates; 3) collect/update information; 4) search and view information; 5) create tracking survey tools; 6) manage tracking survey response data; and 7) generate reports.
