National Conference Focuses on Kenya’s Health Workforce

CapacityPlus staff made key contributions to Kenya’s first national conference on human resources for health (HRH), held December 7-9 in Nairobi. Attended by around 500 participants, the conference brought together a broad range of HRH stakeholders—including representatives from government ministries, the private sector, nongovernmental organizations, and faith-based groups. The conference theme focused on renewing commitment to the health workforce toward achievement of the Millennium Development Goals and Kenya’s Vision 2030 development blueprint. Read more »

Health on the Highway: Study Assesses Impact of New Route in Bolivia and Peru

Frontier areas along the border between Bolivia and Peru are now more accessible due to the recent completion of the transoceanic highway linking Peruvian ports on the Pacific Ocean with Brazilian ports on the Atlantic. Along with the commerce, migration, and truck traffic spurred by the highway will come likely increases in the incidence of HIV, tuberculosis, and other communicable diseases in the border region, as well as a general hike in the demand for health services. Family Planning and the Role of Health Workers: CapacityPlus Plays Active Role in International Conference on Family Planning

CapacityPlus played a prominent role in the 2011 International Conference on Family Planning, held November 29 – December 2 in Dakar, Senegal. The well-attended conference was cosponsored by The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, USAID, UNFPA, the World Bank, and the World Health Organization. Read more »

African Health Ministers Commit to eHealth

Last month, a number of African health ministers recommitted to making more investments in the health sector, building greater health research capacity, accelerating the response to noncommunicable diseases, and employing eHealth technologies to improve the efficiency, quality, and use of health services, among other things. These commitments were made in the form of eight resolutions that resulted from the 54th Conference of the East, Central, and Southern African (ECSA) Health Ministers. Nursing Education Partnership Initiative Launched in Five Countries

The Nursing Education Partnership Initiative (NEPI) was launched for the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Ethiopia, Lesotho, Malawi, and Zambia during an inaugural meeting held on November 14-17 in Lilongwe, Malawi. NEPI is the US Government’s unified program to address the underproduction of nursing professionals in developing countries. The five African countries will implement quality nursing and midwifery education at scale in selected schools. Read more »

Increasing Access to Integrated Services: Scott Radloff on the Key Role of Health Workers

In the context of the global health worker shortage and the rapidly expanding population, getting health services to people in need is a persistent challenge. “Women and families often live long distances from the nearest health facility,” says Scott Radloff, director of USAID’s Office of Population and Reproductive Health, “so strategies that extend information and services to the community level are the ones that have proven largely successful.” Read more »
