Strengthening Human Resources Management in Malawi

CapacityPlus is helping the Christian Health Association of Malawi (CHAM) strengthen human resources management (HRM) in affiliated health facilities, starting with the creation of HRM policy guidelines. Previously, CapacityPlus provided technical support for a week-long consultation with the Christian Health Association of Kenya on the development of its well-received HRM policy document. Improving Health Worker Education in Malawi

Malawi’s vacancy rate for nursing and midwifery positions in the public sector is 65%, but producing more health workers to fill the gaps is no easy task. In the latest edition of CapacityPlus Voices, Nurses Needed: Partnering to Scale Up Health Worker Education in Malawi, Verah Nkosi shares her perspective as a nursing-midwifery student in her final year of training. Uganda Launches National Health Workforce Information System Built on iHRIS

On February 7, the Uganda Ministry of Health (MOH) and USAID/Uganda jointly launched the country’s Human Resources for Health Information System (HRHIS), which provides up-to-date information on the country’s health workforce for evidence-based decision-making. Vice President Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi presided over a launch ceremony at the Hotel Africana; Minister of Health Honorable Richard Nduhura delivered a speech and held a press conference. Webinar Focuses on Role of Community Members and Workers in Social Services

How can community members and workers contribute most effectively to ensuring social services for vulnerable children and families? More than 70 participants from a range of countries joined a webinar on January 17 to consider key and emerging issues related to working with community members, including voluntarism, accountability, workloads, roles and responsibilities, and sustainability. Hosted by the Social Service Workforce Strengthening Alliance via CapacityPlus, the webinar was the fourth in a series funded by PEPFAR, and the first to be offered in both English and French (on January 19). Growing the Global iHRIS Community, One Bounty at a Time

More than a dozen countries are implementing CapacityPlus's open source iHRIS software, which provides information for health leaders to track, manage, and plan their health workforce. CapacityPlus, along with other projects and organizations, provides assistance to these countries to install and adapt the software for local needs. As more countries continue to express interest in iHRIS, CapacityPlus is striving to broaden and strengthen a global community of people that can help support and sustain the software. Read more »

Utilizing Health Workforce Information and Mobile Phone Technology in Uganda

The Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners’ Council (UMDPC) recently launched a new mobile directory, which provides information Ugandans can use to seek health services from qualified health workers at qualified facilities. By combining health workforce data with mobile phone technology, the system also allows council staff and health facility managers to easily verify health professionals’ credentials and cut down on unqualified practitioners.
