Work Climate Article Selected for Health Development Collection

In Kenya, the Capacity Project (the predecessor to CapacityPlus) worked with the Ministry of Health to pilot simple, low-cost interventions to improve the workplace environment in 10 rural facilities. A story related to this work—“What about the health workers?”: Improving the work climate at rural facilities in Kenya—has been selected for inclusion in issue 11 of the eTALC Health Development CD-ROM.

Participants in workplace climate improvement initiativeeTALC is a project of Teaching Aids at Low Cost, based in the UK. Since 2001, eTALC has disseminated over 60,000 CDs with up-to-date health information free to health workers in developing countries. eTALC selected the Kenya story based on its relevance for health workers in low-resource settings.

Prior to the work climate interventions, an initial survey found very low morale among health workers in the ten pilot sites. Facility-based teams generated their own activity plans to test low-cost approaches. In a follow-up survey, nearly all staff expressed high satisfaction and had no intention of leaving. All sites reported increases in service use.

This work is continuing through Capacity Kenya. Led by IntraHealth International, it builds on the success of the Capacity Project.
