&lt;p&gt;In collaboration with the PEPFAR Medical Education Partnership Initiative (MEPI) Community-Based Education (CBE) Technical Working Group and the MEPI Coordinating Center, Capacity&lt;em&gt;Plus&lt;/em&gt; organized and conducted a peer review of the CBE program of the University of Zimbabwe College of Heath Sciences (UZCHS). The review was based on a validated methodology developed by the Collaboration for Health Equity through Education and Research (CHEER), which was formed in 2003 in South Africa to examine strategies that would increase the production of health professional graduates who choose to practice in rural and underserved areas of South Africa. The review served two purposes: 1) to provide a practical training experience in the CHEER peer review process for representatives from four MEPI-supported schools; and 2) to explore the strengths and weaknesses of the UZCHS field attachment program with respect to how well students are being prepared to serve in rural and underserved areas in Zimbabwe.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;One of the recommendations from a 2013 &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.human-resources-health.com/content/12/1/20&quot;&gt;Capacity&lt;em&gt;Plus&lt;/em&gt; assessment of PEPFAR-funded in-service training in Nigeria&lt;/a&gt; was to ensure broader access to new developments in knowledge and technology, as well as sustainability of training, by integrating the in-service training contents into preservice education curricula and continuing professional development programs. This assessment explored community health extension worker and community health officer perceptions of globally-accepted competency domains for public health practitioners across the areas of importance, and confidence in their ability to demonstrate those competencies. To corroborate findings at the domain level, the assessment also assessed these health workers at the individual skill/ability levels, which are mapped to the competency domain areas. Need scores were calculated for each competency domain and individual skill/ability levels. A need score ranking placed the need for computer and information technology access and skills as the top priority among health workers who participated in the study. Financial planning and management and public health science skills ranked a close second and third.&lt;/p&gt;

Each MEPI-supported school representative developed a draft 100-day strategic action plan for his/her institution with three common outcome objectives: 1) build/achieve consensus from key stakeholders on how to apply the software; 2) define needs for adapting, deploying, and maintaining the software; and 3) deploy the software.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;This compendium of tools was disseminated to participants at the Medical  Education Partnership Initiative  Community-Based Education Evaluation  Workshop. Participants used the pre-workshop activities tool to prepare in advance. In  collaboration with  the MEPI community-based education  technical working  group, Capacity&lt;em&gt;Plus&lt;/em&gt;   and the MEPI  Coordinating Center conducted the workshop, which was held on April 1–3,  2014, in Kampala, Uganda. The participants represented 11  MEPI-supported institutions and  consortiums in  seven  countries.  During the workshop they shared good practices for community-based  education evaluation, drafted   school-specific program evaluation  plans, and strengthened the community-based education community of  practice.&lt;/p&gt;

In  collaboration with the MEPI community-based education technical working  group, Capacity&lt;em&gt;Plus&lt;/em&gt;   and the MEPI Coordinating Center conducted the workshop, which was held on April 1–3, 2014, in Kampala, Uganda.&lt;/p&gt;

In  collaboration with the MEPI eLearning technical  working group, Capacity&lt;em&gt;Plus&lt;/em&gt;   and the MEPI Coordinating Center  organized and conducted the  workshop, which was held in Gaborone, Botswana, on  February 24–27,  2014. The participants represented 11 MEPI-supported schools and one MEPI consortium.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;In the transition to the post-Millennium Development Goals era, many low and middle-income countries will be making significant shifts in their national health policies. The leadership that is drawn upon to make policy changes tends to be in ministries of health, flagship hospitals, physicians and nurses associations, and social protection entities. Health professional schools are an additional and valuable—yet often overlooked—source of leadership in health reform and health policy-making. This technical brief highlights some examples of how the education and research leadership of health professional schools has engaged, influenced, or obtained resources from national policy-makers and others with significant influence on the health sector. The brief also reviews instances in which different health educational institutions and professional associations have worked to shape national responses to health system needs.&lt;/p&gt;
