&lt;p&gt;During 2014-2015, Capacity&lt;em&gt;Plus&lt;/em&gt; and the Medical Education Partnership Initiative (MEPI) conducted a peer review of the community-based education component of the medical education program at the University of Zimbabwe College of Health Sciences. One purpose of the activity was to expose colleagues in the MEPI community to the process and tools of conducting a peer review. This step-by-step guide to the peer review process is targeted at educators and leaders in health sciences faculties and medical schools. While primarily focused on MEPI-supported schools, it is expected to be of assistance to health professions schools internationally that are interested in such an evaluation and improvement approach.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;In collaboration with the PEPFAR Medical Education Partnership Initiative (MEPI) Community-Based Education (CBE) Technical Working Group and the MEPI Coordinating Center, Capacity&lt;em&gt;Plus&lt;/em&gt; organized and conducted a peer review of the CBE program of the University of Zimbabwe College of Heath Sciences (UZCHS). The review was based on a validated methodology developed by the Collaboration for Health Equity through Education and Research (CHEER), which was formed in 2003 in South Africa to examine strategies that would increase the production of health professional graduates who choose to practice in rural and underserved areas of South Africa. The review served two purposes: 1) to provide a practical training experience in the CHEER peer review process for representatives from four MEPI-supported schools; and 2) to explore the strengths and weaknesses of the UZCHS field attachment program with respect to how well students are being prepared to serve in rural and underserved areas in Zimbabwe.&lt;/p&gt;

Many MEPI programmes include elements of community-based education (CBE) such as: community placements; clinical rotations in underserved locations, community medicine, or primary health; situational analyses; or student-led research.Capacity&lt;em&gt;Plus &lt;/em&gt;and the MEPI Coordinating Center conducted a workshop to share good practices for CBE evaluation, identify approaches that can be used for CBE evaluation in the African context, and strengthen a network of CBE collaborators.This report describes key insights from the workshop, and highlights plans for CBE evaluation among the MEPI institutions.This workshop clearly demonstrated the widespread interest in improving CBE evaluation efforts and a need to develop, implement, and disseminate rigorous approaches and tools relevant to the African context.&lt;/p&gt;

In  collaboration with the MEPI community-based education technical working  group, Capacity&lt;em&gt;Plus&lt;/em&gt;   and the MEPI Coordinating Center conducted the workshop, which was held on April 1–3, 2014, in Kampala, Uganda.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;This article examines the various models, challenges, and evaluative efforts of community-based education programs at &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.mepinetwork.org/&quot;&gt;Medical Education Partnership Initiative&lt;/a&gt; (MEPI) schools and makes recommendations to strengthen those programs in the African context. Data were gathered from 12 MEPI schools. All schools reported a number of challenges in meeting the demands of increased student enrollment. Planned strategies used to tackle these challenges include motivating faculty, deploying students across expanded centers, and adopting innovations. Although the programs have similar goals, their strategies for achieving these goals vary. To identify approaches that successfully address the challenges, particularly with increasing enrollment, medical schools need to develop structured models and tools for evaluating the processes, outcomes, and impacts of community-based education programs. &lt;p&gt;In collaboration with the MEPI community-based education technical working group, Capacity&lt;em&gt;Plus&lt;/em&gt; and the MEPI coordinating center conducted a community-based education evaluation workshop in Kampala, Uganda, April 1–3, 2014. The workshop brought together representatives from 11 MEPI-supported institutions and consortiums in 7 countries.&lt;/p&gt;
