Dean's Dashboard

The Dean’s Dashboard is a free, computerized, open source tool that helps the leaders of educational institutions manage their schools more efficiently. The dashboard allows school leaders to systematically define strategic, indicator-based goals for their educational programs and routinely monitor progress toward achieving them. Charts and graphs created and monitored on the dashboard can be easily saved, shared, and integrated into presentations, brochures, websites, and other key management materials. A school’s management team can download and customize the standard dashboard linked to this page, or build their own customized dashboard using the most recent version of the powerful DHIS2 software. The step-by-step user’s manual and DHIS2 expert community provide guidance and support to install, customize, and maximize the use of the dashboard for data-driven decision making.

Assessment of Preservice Education eLearning Courses Using the QStream Platform

This report assesses two eLearning courses developed by CapacityPlus that are offered through QStream, a learning platform that uses a spaced, repeated question-and-answer format that has been shown to improve the retention of knowledge over time. The Private Sector Participation in Preservice Health Education course provides an overview of factors bearing on the success of private sector involvement in educating health workers. It explores the similarities between public and private institutions; challenges for private schools; and business models in use by private preservice education institutions. Transforming Health Professional Preservice Education to Meet National Needs

CapacityPlus supported more than 50 health professional schools in 12 African countries to strengthen health workforce education and school management, contributing to over 9,000 new health workers and building the capacity of these schools to continue scaling up production of graduates and improving the efficiency and quality of their programs.

Guide for Conducting Peer Reviews of Community-Based Health Sciences Education Programs

During 2014-2015, CapacityPlus and the Medical Education Partnership Initiative (MEPI) conducted a peer review of the community-based education component of the medical education program at the University of Zimbabwe College of Health Sciences. One purpose of the activity was to expose colleagues in the MEPI community to the process and tools of conducting a peer review. This step-by-step guide to the peer review process is targeted at educators and leaders in health sciences faculties and medical schools. While primarily focused on MEPI-supported schools, it is expected to be of assistance to health professions schools internationally that are interested in such an evaluation and improvement approach.

Compendium of Approaches and Tools for Expanding High-Quality Health Workforce Education and Training

This compendium categorizes and describes approaches and tools that national stakeholders can use to address common challenges in expanding high-quality education and training. It lists sources of globally-recognized, evidence-based guidelines and recommendations for scaling up and transforming health professional education. It then suggests resources to support the implementation of those recommendations, categorized in relation to the health workforce production pipeline framework.

Peer Review of the Community-Based Medical Education Program at the University of Zimbabwe College of Health Sciences

In collaboration with the PEPFAR Medical Education Partnership Initiative (MEPI) Community-Based Education (CBE) Technical Working Group and the MEPI Coordinating Center, CapacityPlus organized and conducted a peer review of the CBE program of the University of Zimbabwe College of Heath Sciences (UZCHS). The review was based on a validated methodology developed by the Collaboration for Health Equity through Education and Research (CHEER), which was formed in 2003 in South Africa to examine strategies that would increase the production of health professional graduates who choose to practice in rural and underserved areas of South Africa. The review served two purposes: 1) to provide a practical training experience in the CHEER peer review process for representatives from four MEPI-supported schools; and 2) to explore the strengths and weaknesses of the UZCHS field attachment program with respect to how well students are being prepared to serve in rural and underserved areas in Zimbabwe.

Strengthening School Management: A Guide for Optimizing the Use of Health Workforce Education Resources

Education and training institutions around the globe are struggling to meet the increasing demand for more high-quality health workers. A more business-like approach to operating and managing these institutions would allow schools to produce greater numbers of competent and qualified graduates within budget. This guide includes self-assessment against predefined management standards or good practices, followed by prioritization, goal-setting, planning, implementation, and monitoring of progress.
