CapacityPlus Paper on HR Information Systems Presented at Health Workforce Conference

A paper by CapacityPlus’s Dykki Settle, Carl Leitner, Carol Bales, and consultant George Blair, “Using Routine Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS) to Manage, Measure, and Monitor the Health Workforce,” was presented at the International Conference on Research in Human Resources for Health. The conference took place June 9-11 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Presented by former colleague Dr. Danny de Vries, the paper highlighted the importance and benefits of implementing a routine HRIS and gave an overview of the five-step HRIS strengthening process. De Vries explained how HRIS fits into the larger context of a country’s health information system. Finally, he presented selected results from implementing countries, including using data for improving strategic planning, workforce planning and monitoring, operations, and quality assurance.

The chief director of the Human Resources Development/Employee Wellness Program at South Africa’s Gauteng Provincial Government, D.G. Joseph, requested information on how to develop an HRIS in Gauteng, where she manages over 10,000 health workers. “South Africa really needs this,” she said. De Vries referred her to the CapacityPlus HRIS team, and follow-up contact has helped her receive instructions for downloading the iHRIS software and accessing the demos.
